Update 11/21/2017: Four new badges

There are four new badges for participants in the Google Local Guide program. They should reward special achievements as a reviewer, photographer, trailblazer or fact-findinger. The more you post, the higher the badges. You can move up from a novice to an expert and finally to a "master". Under "My Contributions" you can see if you have already received a badge.

Google Local Guide: That's what it's all about

With Google Local Guide, which is more precisely a Google Maps Local Guide, users of the map and navigation application Google Maps can rate restaurants, cafes, shops, car workshops and all other facilities on Google Maps, add photos and make corrections Suggest existing entries on Google Maps. The local participant in Google Local Guide acts as a guide for non-locales, hence the name of the program.

Reward for every activity

Google rewards every review, photo and every other activity as part of the Google Local Guide with points. You always get one Point for an evaluation, an answer or the verification of information. five Points are awarded for a review, a photo or a change. 15 Points are awarded for each newly added location.

It can take up to 24 hours for your points and your level to be updated in the Google Maps app. You can see the current score immediately in the browser front-end.

In principle, points do not expire, but can be removed retrospectively if a review violates the regulations. You will also lose points if the rated companies are closed.

The more points you collect, the higher the guide rises in the five-level level system. But you shouldn't expect too much from the rewards per level, the rewards are not really exciting.

Google Local Guide Level: Reward System (from June 14, 2017)

Google changed the level system on June 14, 2017. Since then there have been ten levels instead of the previous five. The differences between the new levels border on real satire - only the local guide level logo changes with each level! The first logo is available from level 4, after which it changes slightly with each new level. The change in the logo is so small every time that you hardly notice it at first glance.

In addition, from level 4, Google offers small discounts for films and music on Google Play. However, this offer is limited to August 31, 2017.

Conclusion: The new bonus system is just as uninteresting as the previous one. There are still no really exciting rewards. For information, here is the old bonus and level system that was valid until June 14, 2017:

Level 1 (0-4 points)

  • Monthly local guide newsletter

  • Participation in Google workshops and hangouts

  • Exclusive competitions for local guides in selected countries

Level 2 (5-49 points)

  • Early access to new Google products and features

  • Advertise your own meetings in the Local Guide calendar

Level 3 (50–199 points)

  • Google Maps app displays the Google Local Guide logo

  • Contact with other local guides in the Google+ community

  • Moderate local guides community channels

  • Invitations to Google events in select cities

Level 4 (200–499 points)

  • They can be presented on Local Guides' online channels

Level 5 (from 500 points)

  • Try out new Google products before they're released

  • Apply for the Conference for Local Guides

There are also meetings for local guides. So much for the old bonus system until June 14, 2017.
