Breast Cancer What is Tamoxifen Citrate

Anti-hormones also have their side effects

Compared to chemotherapy, anti-hormone therapy has relatively few side effects. Nevertheless, various side effects also occur with this form of therapy.

For premenopausal women, the withdrawal of estrogens leads to the fact that they are catapulted from "one day to the next" into the menopause and are confronted with the typical symptoms: absence of the period, hot flashes, sweating, dry mucous membranes, occasionally sleep disorders, depressive moods and weight gain. Sexuality can also be restricted, and the possible loss of pleasure in sex life (loss of lipids) can have a negative impact on the partnership.

Tamoxifen

Has been known for decades and is well tolerated by women after the menopause (postmenopausal). However, treatment with tamoxifen can lead to blood clotting disorders (thrombosis) and growths on the lining of the uterus (mucosal polyps). If you are being treated with tamoxifen, you should therefore have a vaginal ultrasound examination carried out by your gynecologist twice a year to determine the thickness of the uterine lining and contact him immediately in the event of irregular bleeding.

Aromatase inhibitors

They are used in postmenopausal patients and can cause muscle and joint problems as well as impair the lipid metabolism, which can lead to weight gain. Withdrawal of estrogen promotes the breakdown of bone substance and thus increases the risk of osteoporosis (bone loss). In addition to exercise and a diet rich in calcium, nutritional supplements with calcium and vitamin D and the administration of a bisphosphonate every four to six months are suitable for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Information on bisphosphonates:
These drugs are specifically deposited on the bone substance and inhibit their pathological breakdown. There is also evidence that the administration of a bisphosphonate after initial treatment for breast cancer can reduce the risk of bone metastases, but only in women who have already passed their menopause.

GnRH analogs

Because of the lowered estrogen level, premenopausal patients also experience the symptoms typical of menopause. Intolerance reactions, blood pressure fluctuations and changes in the sugar metabolism are also rarely possible. The decrease in bone density can also occur with prolonged intake.

Acupuncture against the "heat"

NumerousMenopausal symptoms can be alleviated by certain drugs and herbal substances (such as the silver grape candle, sage) or by acupuncture and yoga. It is best to ask your doctor and / or a naturopath or homeopath. Systemic hormone replacement therapy is strongly discouraged.

Women can breathe easy. Acupuncture gives breast cancer patients who are treated with the estrogen brake tamoxifen after surgery to relieve hot flashes. Acupuncture has two advantages over other forms of hot flash treatment: it is affordable and it does not cause harmful side effects.

These research results were presented at the 6th European Breast Cancer Congress in Berlin (EBCC-6). The Norwegian physiotherapist and acupuncturist at Vestfold Central Hospital told a press conference that hot flashes were cut in half in women with breast cancer treated with traditional Chinese acupuncture. This effect applied both day and night and persisted even after acupuncture was stopped.

The study carried out between March 2003 and December 2006 involved 59 breast cancer patients.
