Let hair grease: how does it work?

Greasing your hair is actually very simple: You shouldn't wash your hair for at least five days. Shampoo is taboo, instead you only get water on your hair. Sometimes shampoo alternatives such as rye flour or clay are also used. Hence the name of the trend "No Poo".

Working from home, no parties, no meetings with friends, hardly anyone would see you with greasy and unwashed hair at the moment - when, if not now, is the right time to try out the trend?

Expert opinion: what's the point of letting your hair grease out?

Bad news for everyone who thought the “no poo trend” would make for more beautiful hair: Unfortunately, it is not only uncomfortable but also ineffective to let your hair dry, according to the devastating judgment of an expert on skin and hair issues.

"The fact that you let the sebum glands out and regulate the fat production is a old wives' tale", says Christiane Bayerl, Director of the Clinic for Dermatology and Allergology at the Helios Clinic in Wiesbaden. "The sebum glands produce as they produce."

Greasing your hair can even make you sick

Especially if you have oily hair, you should not wash your hair less often: "It can make you sick if you produce too much fat and then don't wash it off," says the expert.
Certain fungi that we always have on our skin feed on the fats in the scalp.

If we let our hair grease out, if we do not remove the fats thoroughly and regularly, the fungi will multiply excessively. As a result, the balance of our scalp becomes confused and itching and eczema can develop. More dandruff also forms on the oily scalp. It's all pretty gross, isn't it?

Wash your hair only with water instead of shampoo?

On the other hand, the expert is open to the trend of washing your hair with water instead of shampoo: "If you want to wash your hair more than two or three times a week, it would be good to only wash it once Wash water, "says the dermatologist.

Bayerl strongly advises against washing your hair for weeks only with water and without shampoo. In this way the fat is not removed - with the consequences mentioned above.

How good are home remedies for washing hair instead of shampoo?

Finally some good news: Alternatives such as rye flour or clay, which are mixed with water to wash your hair, can actually work.

"If you have cared for your hair a lot with packs and conditioners, for example, the length of the hair is quite nice, but it is often still greasy at the hairline," explains Christiane Bayerl.

Rubble particles as in Rye flour and Clay or light acids such as dilute raspberry vinegar can help remove the oils on the hairline. But they cannot change the sebum production.

How often should you wash your hair?

How often you should wash your hair depends on your skin type. If you have dry skin or eczema, you shouldn't wash your hair more often than every three days. "In that case, the scalp is more sensitive to the substances that wash the fats out of the skin," explains the doctor.

If you do sport every day, you can wash your hair twice a day - preferably without shampoo in the morning and with shampoo in the evening.

What to do with oily hair

If you have very oily hair, there are a few things to watch out for. Sweat, for example, stimulates the sebum glands to produce more fat. So if you do exercise a lot, you should always wash your hair afterwards. In winter, a thick hat can stimulate the production of fat on the scalp. So choose a lighter headgear.

One often hears the tip that cold water stimulates sebum production less than hot water. However, that is not true. Hot water removes oil from your scalp, but it also irritates and dries it out. It is therefore best to use water at normal temperatures to wash your hair.

What to do with a pathologically oily scalp?

It also happens that the skin produces an extremely high amount of fat or too much fat. Doctors then speak of the fact that the skin is seborrheic. If the scalp is pathologically oily, more eczema or fungi can develop. In this case, you should use an anti-fungal shampoo. A dermatologist can prescribe this for you.
