Can we eat an orfe fish?

Golden orfe in the garden pond | 10 tips for keeping & propagation

When we keep fish in the garden pond, we want to watch them happily. Golden oranges are ideal for this, because with their golden yellow color they cannot be overlooked. In addition, this fish can be obtained cheaply and requires little maintenance. We give you tips on how you can optimally design your living conditions. Then he can swim his laps in the water for years.

Hold several orfen

Golden orfe are schooling fish. Ideally, they should be kept in larger numbers. If that is not possible, at least one couple should do their laps in the pond. A single golden orfe will feel lonely. Apart from that, no increase can then take place either.

Suitable "roommates"

Of course, you can also keep orfen with other types of fish. But the different species should harmoniously share their common habitat. If you would like to buy another type of fish, check with the dealer about this. Orfen get along with the following fish species, among others:

  • Bitterling
  • Erlitz
  • Goldfish
  • Gold loop
  • Moderlieschen

The combination with Koi is also common. But here you have to reckon with the fact that the Koi will reproduce less strongly than if they lived alone. This is because gold orfe like to eat their fish spawn.

Start with healthy specimens

Goldorf, which is a breed that originated in Aland, also reproduce well in a garden pond. But the first copies have to be procured first. These freshness are for

Garden ponds have become so popular that you can easily buy them in pet shops. Local koi traders also often sell this type of fish. This makes it possible to inspect every golden orfe on site and to convince yourself of the good breeding conditions.

In the meantime, however, this type of fish is also offered on the Internet. An attractive price is definitely a selling point. However, be sure to buy from a reputable source as well. Otherwise it can happen that you bring diseases into the garden pond with the newly acquired fish.

Pay attention to the optimal size of the pond

In the course of their life, which can last more than 10 years under optimal conditions, the golden orfe develop into a large fish. In a garden pond, each specimen can be up to 50 cm long and weigh around 3.5 kg. That is why the pond must not be too small. The fish of this species are also fast swimmers. This also requires enough room to move. Your pond should have at least the following dimensions:

  • elongated pond shape is ideal
  • without too much planting
  • with at least 4 m3 water volume
  • and at least 1 m depth

Orfen like to jump, so the edge of the pond must be laid out in such a way that the fish have no opportunity to jump out.

Plan fish stocking

According to the experts, the keeping of gold orfe requires 500 to 1000 liters of water for each fish. The optimal fish population is therefore calculated by dividing the pond volume by this value. But the time factor must not be ignored. When the Orfen diligently multiply in the spring,

their number will at least double every year. In connection with good feeding, the pond can soon be teeming with Orfen.
  • start with a couple
  • or use max. 5-6 Orfen

You should definitely follow this recommendation, even if the pond seems a bit understaffed at the beginning. Subsequent fishing out to reduce the population is difficult. Draining the pond water is just as time-consuming, laborious and, in the case of large garden ponds, a cost factor that should not be underestimated.

Ensure good water quality

The keeping of gold orfe is associated with little effort. But their owner has to ensure one important living condition: good water quality.

  • Pay attention to clean pond water
  • it must not be encumbered
  • should be enriched with plenty of oxygen

You should install a powerful pond filter so that the golden orfe gets its clean water. Without such a filter, the water will hardly meet the requirements of this fish. An oxidator that ensures a high concentration of oxygen is also a sensible purchase.

Feed the fish properly

The golden orfe is an uncomplicated fish when it comes to food. She is not solely dependent on her owner's fish feed. She finds a lot of food in her immediate vicinity, especially in summer. Therefore, additional feed can usually be dispensed with at this time of the year. If nature's food supply is good, it would even leave it where it is. Fortunately, she also leaves the planting of the pond alone.

  • no special fish food required
  • normal fish food is sufficient - e.g. B. Grain feed
  • Goldorf also look specifically for food - e.g. B. Spawn from other fish
  • Tadpoles
  • Mosquito larvae
  • worms
  • other pond insects from the water surface

Special "color feed" is offered on the market. The manufacturer promises that this will keep the golden orfe in its strong golden hue. It is enough if you feed some of it every now and then.

Note: Large gold orfe also eat small fish of other species. They are therefore ideal when the stocking of other fish species in the pond is to be reduced naturally.

Protect from predators

By keeping it outdoors

these fish have some predators to fear. Stray cats and, in some areas, herons are a threat to them. Since gold orfe swim close to the surface of the water, they can be easily fished out by these and other enemies. Their bright color makes them easy to recognize prey. And herons come back to the pond until it is empty. They can even devour orfen up to 30 cm long.

Covering the pond with a fine-meshed net is one possibility. But there are other alternatives available in stores. Therefore, find out at the beginning of your husbandry which protection option is best for you.

Hibernate fish safely

Even if the golden orfe likes a water temperature of 25 ° C in summer, it can overwinter in significantly colder water in winter. The only thing is that the pond must not freeze to the bottom. That is why it is important that its depth is at least one meter. Then the orfen can hibernate outside. Otherwise they have to leave the pond in autumn, which is a laborious affair and also requires alternative accommodation. In addition to a reasonable depth, the pond walls should be insulated if possible.

  • Line the outside of the pond with styrofoam
  • only then let them into the earth
  • Alternatively, isolate existing ponds from the inside
  • Attach Styrofoam panels to the walls afterwards

Avoid disturbing the fish in any way in winter. For example, holes should not be tapped in ice sheets. Other noise and vibrations in the vicinity of the pond should also be avoided.

Promote multiplication

If you are looking to breed orfen, the first thing you need to do is to provide them with a very large pond. They should also be kept in a swarm. The reproduction takes place every year between April and June, whereby only adult fish reproduce. They lay their eggs in shallow areas of the pond.

  • Plant flat areas densely in places
  • the eggs can stick to it
  • Pay attention to a good oxygen supply
  • Feed juvenile fish with zooplankton
  • later with small crustaceans or small insect larvae
