The standard letter

The standard letter, also as a "Classic official letter" is the most common format that is used for mailing and is sent millions of times a day. Important: With standard and compact letters, just the rectangle shape authorized. If you have square envelopes, as is the case with some greeting cards, for example, these must be franked as a large letter.

DIN formats for envelopes

Like paper, envelopes are standardized. The most important standards for envelopes are the DIN B format series and the DIN C format series. The most common envelope sizes in the DIN B series are DIN B6 (2 x folded A4 sheets - postcard format), DIN B5 (1 x folded DIN A4 sheet) and DIN B4 ( suitable for an unfolded A4 page).

The large letter

Our tip: The large letter is also suitable for cost-effective mailing of books or goods. A mailing bag with a tuck-in flap must be used here so that Swiss Post can open and check the shipment quickly. If the content is to be additionally protected, we recommend a Mailer with edge or padding protection. If the contents cannot be creased, you should use a mailing bag with a cardboard back.

Note that the weight of the envelope is added to the total weight.

The maxi letter

The maxi letter can also be called the “heavy brother” of the large letter, as it is for the identical formats can be used, but is used when the maximum weight of 500 g exceeded becomes. The maxi letter is particularly suitable for sending magazines, journals, books, CDs / DVDs, spare parts or textiles, business reports or even longer seminar papers or theses.

Here, however, you should use a mailer made from tear-resistant and padded materialexists, as the shipping bag can be quickly damaged by the weight of the contents. There are a number of special formats that can be sent as a letter. The possibility of the Maxibrief Plus. This is a maxi letter with oversize and / or overweight, which can be sent as a letter with an additional charge of € 2.20 (totaling € 4.80). The following dimensions must be observed:

  • Maximum dimensions: length 60 cm, width 30 cm, height 15 cm or

Locking options for letters

There are a total of four different locking options when sending letters:

  • Gummed envelopes

There are many options for sending letters. In order not to experience any surprises at the post office counter, it is worth purchasing a letter scale. This is advisable for particularly important documents, such as terminations or legal transactions.

Especially when sending larger quantities of printed matter or small goods, sending with a large or maxi letter can save significantly on postage compared to a parcel or parcel.
