Coronavirus Laos: Cases & Infection Numbers

Status on May 20th, 2021:

  • 1,737 proven cases (+ 50 compared to the previous day)
  • 708 have recovered
  • 2 deaths

Vaccinations in Laos

Coronavirus: Visa and Entry to Laos (Changes and Restrictions)

The issuance of a "Visa upon Arrival" or an e-Visa for entry to Laos is general until further notice exposed been.

A Laos tourist visa is also issued by embassies currently no longer issued.

Entry is currently only allowed:

  • Laotian workers from Thailand, Vietnam and China
  • foreign investors, shareholders, experts and diplomats
  • Travelers from China (subject to conditions)

Entry requirements for the named groups:

1.) in advance:

  • Approval from the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • negative COVID-19 test, which must not be older than 72 hours at the time of departure.

2.) After arrival:

  • renewed PCR test (for a fee)
  • 14 days quarantine in an approved hotel (a tracking bracelet must be worn during this time / price for rent: 6 USD / day)
  • Compulsory approved health insurance (approx. 100 USD)

Japan and Laos have agreed that people with long-term residence rights in the other country will be able to enter and leave the country in the future. The next step is to implement an agreement for business travelers.

The Foreign Office and the German Embassy in Vientiane have two Return flights on April 2nd and brought home around 300 German and EU citizens on April 8, 2020. There will be no further return flights.

Air traffic to Laos

The flight connections between Laos and the states of the region have been suspended, with the exception of China. This means that Laos is cut off from the important transfer airports. There are still few flight connections between Laos and China.

An exit from Laos is currently only possible with irregular charter flights via Incheon / South Korea with a connection to Europe. The transit stay in South Korea must not exceed a period of 24 hours. German nationals must report to the German Embassy in Vientiane at least seven days before departure, as the latter must notify the Laotian Foreign Ministry of their departure.

National borders

The current situation has led to an extensive cordoning off of Laos.

Everyone is on March 23, 2020 State border crossings for passenger traffic (entry and transit) has been blocked. There are only exceptions for a few groups of people (see above) and goods transport.

Since the beginning of November, travelers from China have been allowed to re-enter the Boten border crossing, but subject to conditions (see news from October 29, 2020).

Curfews

Depending on the infection, there will be local curfews.

Public life

The current lockdown in Laos was extended to June 3, 2021 in mid-May. The reason for the measure was that the current corona outbreak was not yet under control.

All areas are divided into different colored zones (red / yellow / green), depending on the respective infection process. There are stricter lockdown measures in districts with increased numbers of infections (red and yellow zones) and correspondingly less stringent measures in districts with only a low number of infections (green zones).

Transport and traffic

The national airline Lao Airlines has suspended all domestic flights until June 3, 2021. The public transport of people from the capital to other provinces and vice versa has also been discontinued. Travel between the provinces is prohibited.

No visas are currently being issued for Laos.

There is still no date as of when destinations such as Luang Prabang, Vientiane or Vang Vieng can be visited again by international tourists.

May 21, 2021 Laos: Lockdown extended

The current lockdown in Laos was extended yesterday by two weeks to June 3, 2021. The reason for the measure was that the current corona outbreak was not yet under control.

05.03.2021 Vaccinations start in Laos

Around 1,000 people have already been vaccinated in Laos. In a second phase, 150,000 medical employees and members of risk groups are now to receive a vaccination.

 

October 29, 2020 Laos lets travelers from China into the country

Laos is taking a small step and will open a border crossing for travelers from China on November 1st, 2020 (the country's second most important trading partner after Thailand). However, only under strict rules (only from corona-free provinces in China, 14 days quarantine before entry and another two days in Laos).

Vietnam is to follow a week later. In addition, some border crossings to neighboring countries open for the movement of goods.

 

07/20/2020 The borders remain closed

The Laotian government has once again confirmed that the borders will remain closed to visitors for the time being. Anyone wishing to leave the country must present a medical certificate.

 

07/01/2020 Further easing in Laos

Public life in Laos is gradually returning to normal. Weddings, parties and traditional celebrations can now be held again. The same applies to sporting events. Casinos are also allowed to reopen.

In general, however, special guidelines apply with regard to hygiene and distancing, which the organizers must adhere to.

Karaoke bars, night clubs and internet cafes will remain closed.

The Laotian Times newspaper reports that Laotian citizens and foreigners can enter with proper authorization. This may be granted for:

  • Diplomats
  • Employees of international organizations
  • business people
  • Experts and authorized foreign workers

Tourist visas are not issued.

 

06/11/2020 Travel advice updated

The Federal Foreign Office has updated the travel advice for Laos. Tourists who are still in the country can only travel back to Europe via South Korea. The national borders remain closed to travelers. Tourist visas are not issued.

 

04/16/2020 Laos extends curfew

There is a curfew in Laos, which will be extended from April 15, 2020 to May 3, 2020. Residents should only leave their homes in urgent cases, for example to go shopping or to see a doctor.

 

April 6th, 2020 Additional return flight from Laos

The German embassy in Vientiane has announced that there will be a second return flight from Laos. This starts on April 8th at 9.30 a.m. in Vientiane.

After that there will be no further return flights. More detailed information can be found on the embassy's Facebook page.

March 31, 2020 return flight from Laos

The German embassy in Laos reports on its Facebook page that there will be a return flight from Vientiane to Frankfurt on April 2nd, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.

03/29/2020 Laos: First return flight on March 30th?

According to the German Embassy in Vientiane, a return campaign for Laos is planned in the next few days. The embassy expects a first flight on the night of March 30th to March 31st, 2020.

All individual tourists who are not yet in Vientiane should go to the capital immediately, as every repatriation will start from the international airport in Vientiane.

If you have not already done so, you should register immediately at www.rueckholprogramm.de. A separate data record must be created for each person.

The people scheduled for this flight will be informed by the embassy by email. A second flight is being planned. All information on the website of the German Embassy in Vientiane.

03/25/2020 Everything tight in Laos too

The current situation has meanwhile led to an extensive cordoning off of Laos. All state border crossings are now closed to passenger traffic.

03/18/2020 Laos tightened entry conditions

Now Laos has also made entry conditional. The German Embassy in Vientiane writes:

"A 14-day self-quarantine at home (which must not be left!) Is now imposed on travelers in the following cases:

  • Entry from countries not bordering Laos with more than 100 cases of coronavirus infection, even if there are no Covid 19 symptoms (cold, cough, fever above 37.5 ° C and breathing difficulties) upon entry
  • Entry from neighboring countries to Laos, whose provinces have a coronavirus infection but have no direct border with Laos, with more than 10 cases of coronavirus infection in these provinces
  • Entry from neighboring countries to Laos whose provinces are experiencing the first cases of coronavirus infection with more than 3 cases of infection in these provinces with more than 3 cases of infection in these provinces ”
