About this character

Early life

Quentin Beck was born in Riverside, California. Before becoming Mysterio, Beck was a special effects designer who worked for a large studio and dreamed of making a name for himself in the film industry. Beck began his career as a film stuntman in Hollywood, then became interested in special effects. He became one of the most accomplished special effects designers in the business, but for lack of recognition, he wanted to become an actor. However, he lacked the looks and talent to be a star and the patience to be a director, and he saw his career in special effects as a dead end. When a friend of his jokingly suggested that the quickest way to get famous was to take out a costumed hero, Beck realized that his expertise in illusions could make him an effective super villain. With the choice of Spider-Man, a relatively weak and inexperienced target at the time, Beck prepared his resources for a few months before attempting to eliminate it. [Amazing Spider-Man (Vol 1) # 13] Mysterio, his chosen identity, has become one of Spider-Man's elusive and persistent enemies.

First steps as a villain

Beck studied Spider-Man to emulate him and eventually take his place as a costumed crime fighter. He became a convincing alien under the leadership of the Tinkerer, but was defeated by Spider-Man. [Amazing Spider-Man (Vol 1) # 2] He later posed as Spider-Man and created the identity of Mysterio, but was defeated again. [Amazing Spider-Man (Vol 1) # 13]

Sinister Six

Unable to beat Spider-Man alone, Mysterio was looking for strength in numbers. Early in his career, he and five other members of the Spider-Man villain gallery came together under the direction of Doctor Octopus - a brilliant, well-respected scientist. The first incarnation of the Sinister Six also consisted of the astute Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, the soaring, lowly Vulture and Electro. The villains master plan: attack Spider-Man one after the other until one of them manages to defeat him. The result: Spidey 6, bad guys 0. [Amazing Spider-Man Annual (Vol 1) # 1]

He became one of Spider-Man's most common villains. He once took the alias of the psychiatrist Ludwig Rinehart and almost convinced Spider-Man that he was insane and should reveal his secret identity in order to be cured. [Amazing Spider-Man (Vol 1) # 24]

Against Daredevil and death

In later years, Beck got cancer and decided to drive a hero crazy and chose Daredevil. After discovering Daredevil's true identity, he embarked on an elaborate scheme that included portraying an innocent baby as an antichrist, framing Foggy Nelson for murder, and tricks Matt Murdock's ex-lover, Karen Page, into making her think she was be a carrier of HIV because of her past as a porn star. After hiring Bullseye to find Daredevil and the baby, Karen Page died, protecting Daredevil from him. Eventually, Mysterio was confronted with Daredevil, but when Daredevil refused to give the illusionist the pleasure of personally killing him, he decided he had nothing else to do to live and took his own life. [Daredevil (Vol 2) # 1 - 7]

Return from hell

After Beck was brought out of Hell by a mysterious being, he was sent to the school where Peter Parker (now publicly known as Spider-Man) worked as a teacher while he was attacked by Francis Klum (aka the New Mysterio), to convince Miss Arrow, the school nurse, to help him keep Parker at the school, as it was of interest to both of their masters. [Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (Vol 1) # 11] Some time after the incident, a resurrected Beck put on his original green suit and resumed his life as a criminal. [Amazing Spider-Man (Vol 1) # 618-620]

Ultimate Universe

After discovering another universe, Mysterio created an android that he wanted to use in the conquest of the new earth. [Spider-Men (Vol 1) # 1 - 5] This Mysterio android appeared as the master villain who committed four unhindered crimes by having a police technician set up surveillance cameras in the police department. NYPD Police Chief Frank Quaid asked Spider-Man to help them find the crook who was somehow able to always stay in front of his unit. Mary Jane Watson found out how the criminal did it after the hero informed her of the situation. After police arrested his accomplice, the villain destroyed his hiding place and vowed to get revenge on Spider-Man when he escaped.

Assassination of the Kingpin

After the events in the Ultimate Universe, Mysterio made the next attempt to become the next crime boss in New York City; he reappeared in Fisk Towers and blew Wilson Fisk out of his skyscraper and dropped him hundreds of meters to the ground. He later attempted to rob the Federal Reserve Bank of New York City by releasing a hallucinogen in the center of the city as a distraction. However, Mysterio was again stopped by Spider-Man and he managed to escape with renewed resentment against the hero. Using another hallucinogen and explosive, Mysterio created a simulated Hulk rage and blew up parts of the Queensboro Bridge to encourage the charade. Spider-Man interfered to stop the Hulk and help people escape; although he quickly realized that this was a trap, it was too late when Mysterio fired explosives around Spider-Man, causing Spider-Man to lose consciousness and Mysterio to be victorious ...

Mysterio (in every incarnation) has personal weapons that include a disposable acrylic glass helmet (with 30 minutes of ventilation) and a holographic projector, as well as gloves and boots with nozzles that emit hallucinogenic gas. He developed a gas that can pick up Spider-Man's spider sense, and when enveloped in his fog gases, he uses sonar to detect nearby objects and beings.

It also has more advanced technologies (not of its own design). Mysterio has also created his own version of Spider-Man's filaments, including a weapon that can fire filaments, but he doesn't have full knowledge of the formula.

According to Spider-Man, Mysterio was the one who came up with the name "Sinister Six".
