I think computer science is one of the best majors to choose and has better career prospects than 98% of any other degree, but it's not for everyone. So I'm going to explain who it is for, who it is NOT for and why.
This will help you decide whether or not to study computer science. Let's begin.

Who is computer science good for (and who is it not good for)
If you hate math and hate analytical thinking and problem solving, you will always be the bottom 50% of any software development or computer science worker.
Maybe you can find a low-ranking company and be average at that company, but the pay won't be great and you won't be working on something very exciting or meaningful.
And that negates some of the great advantages of studying computer science in the first place! (more on this).
So don't do it just because your dad told you or you heard that a few years after school you can (you can) make $ 100,000.
Because if you hate this stuff, you're going to be unhappy and not be the guy who makes $ 100,000 anyway. The top companies hire people who LOVE this stuff and are passionate about it.
If you like solving problems, like math, want to study in general ... you will enjoy computer science. All of the above benefits are true, and you will enjoy the career paths that computer science offers ...
Types of Jobs You Can Get With a Computer Science Major
If you have a computer science degree, are motivated to do some side projects on Github in your senior year to show that you care about this stuff and are ready to be in a big city like New York, San Francisco, Boston, LA (or) work Even in a smaller town like Austin, TX, you can make $ 100,000 FAST. Within a few years.
You can develop mobile apps (iOS or Android)
These could be game developers, mobile-focused companies (like Uber), or companies with a website that also have a mobile app (e.g. a bank or financial institution).
You can join a digital agency and run a wide variety of projects or work for a single company
I recommend option 2. Digital agencies tend to burn people out, and once you get into it it is more difficult to get hired by a tech company with a single product. If it were me, I'd just start there.
Whether you join an agency or a company with a single product or platform, the choice is yours as to what type of programming you want to specialize in.
You can concentrate on the front end (The part of the website that you can see as a visitor) or backend engineering (how the interface shown interacts with the database and any information that you cannot see). Or some people do both of what is known as "full stack" development.
You can do web developmentor create software that the public doesn't see - like an internal dashboard that a company's employees use.
You can get in Data engineering and data science also. This area is going to be huge and these people are getting paid a TON.
In New York (the city where I worked as a tech recruiter for startups), it's normal to see a good data engineer with a couple of years of experience earning $ 150,000 or more for base salary. I'm talking about someone in their twenties who doesn't manage people. Not bad, right?
Why do people earn so much after studying computer science?
There's a HUGE shortage of talent
Tech companies, especially start-ups, are starving for good engineering talent with a four-year degree in computer science (A certificate from these "Code Bootcamps", which last 12 weeks, is NOT the same... They don't start with the same basic understanding of computer science, algorithms, etc ... and companies know this).
Of course, you can do a 12 week bootcamp and be a decent web developer, but you won't get hired as an engineer on Facebook or Spotify or anything.
Anyway, my point is that these companies are funding millions of dollars from venture capital firms. You're not trying to save $ 20,000 on your salary when you're motivated and have a computer science degree from a good school. They are trying to find great people who will build their product and make it a great success.
This means that you will be paid very well, especially if you switch companies once or twice at the start of your career.
Long-term outlook on the careers of computer science majors
In the long run, if you want to lead people, eventually you can lead an engineering team or department.
If not, you can take a look at what is called the "software" architecture. A good architect can make $ 180,000 to $ 200,000 without managing anyone.
You can also create a product and start a business yourself.
Computer science is currently an outstanding career path. If you go to a decent school for the computer science program, post-graduate business will haunt you if you are in a medium or large city.
Further advantages of the computer science major
1. Tech companies treat their software engineers like KINGS
When you join a tech-driven company like Spotify, Facebook, Apple, etc (not a job doing software engineering for Walmart etc) you will be treated like absolute king.
Most of these companies let you wear jeans, give you free food, and many other perks. Not all but most.
Will that change in the next 5 years? No.
The world is built in technology. More and more products are becoming "connected devices" - physical products that have a software component and connect online. Thermostats, refrigerators, cars, etc.
So we're not just talking about websites and mobile apps here.
In addition, e-commerce is becoming more and more massive. Amazon hires some of the best software engineers in the world to keep their systems running smoothly.
There will be so many new areas like this, along with all of the traditional areas that require great talent for software development (finance, games and entertainment, virtual reality, SaaS, etc.).
2. High probability that you can work remotely
This is not guaranteed and depends on the company, but of all professions there is one of the easiest ways to get there working remotely.
Other Careers That Are Likely To Find Remote Job:
- Skilled writing (copywriting, medical writing, etc.)
- "Inside" sales (telephone sales)
- Customer care (poorly paid. Not recommended!)
Back to software engineering. Why Find a Remote Job When You Have a Computer Science Degree?
Your skills will be in great demand, and your day-to-day work does not necessarily require personal contact with your colleagues. This is a good recipe for being able to work from home or elsewhere.

Overall, computer science is a very good major for many types of students, and I would choose it if I were to start over in my adult life.
The question: "Should I study computer science?" is complicated and depends on your interests, personality, motivation and your other options.
In general, however, computer science is a very good major that is incredibly useful and gives you the opportunity to build things that will shape the world and be used by millions of people.
And you get paid very well in the process.
If you want to become an entrepreneur in the future, a computer science background will be helpful there too.
(The only thing I would find more useful is knowledge of marketing / sales, but these are things you need to learn in the real world anyway. The things they teach in schools on these topics are NOT going to help you to start a business or succeed as an entrepreneur. And you can find a co-founder who is a marketer or salesperson anyway if you don't want to learn this stuff).
