Why is Alexandria Ocasio Cortez so great

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is young, hip and socialist

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, is causing a sensation in Washington. The congresswoman is a newcomer to politics. Behind her there is a sworn group of revolutionaries.

The Democrats have a new political star: young, telegenic, captivating. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. At 29, she is the youngest member of the US Congress and in her first six weeks sparked as many debates as US President Donald Trump next to her.

But the party is not entirely at ease. Because the MP for the New York constituencies of Queens and Brooklyn brings the Democrats not only a lot of attention and glamor, but also problems. Ocasio-Cortez wants nothing more than a socialist revolution.

She fights for drastic tax increases for the rich, a state health system, for a basic income and the break-up of Google and Facebook. This type of revolution goes too far for the established Democrats. The whiz kid could deter moderate white people from the middle class. These had given the Democrats a brilliant victory in the last congressional elections in November.

As good as Trump on Twitter

But Ocasio-Cortez is popular, especially with women, minorities and young people, millennials like themselves. Because of or maybe despite their radicalism. With some requests, it also met with approval from the general public. According to the poll, 59 percent of Americans agreed to their demand that wealthy people with incomes over $ 10 million be taxed at 70 percent.

For Republicans, the young Latina from the Bronx is a welcome target. Suddenly it is said that there is a red danger from the Democrats. "America will never be a socialist country," said Trump in his address to the nation.

A steep pass for Ocasio-Cortez, who describes herself as a democratic socialist: “It is great that Trump is now warning against socialism - it shows that we are getting under his skin. He has no substantial, positive vision and only builds on nightmares. With Trump as the pilot, we fly without a pilot. "

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has so many Twitter followers and over 7000 entries. She also shows her private page on Instagram for 2.4 million followers and gives tips on facial care, for example.

194 000 $

That was the budget of her election campaign in Queens. It was supported by organizations such as “Black Lives Matter” and individual donations. Your opponent Joe Crowley, however, took 3.4 million dollars from companies such as Google.

3.16 million

The daughter of an architect and a housewife with roots in Puerto Rico does not only sweep people away with left-wing slogans, but because she makes politics understandable for the general public and exploits this on social media. She is a Twitter professional, at least that's what she has in common with Donald Trump.

An example: The politician recently used a hearing in Congress to shed light on the lobbying system in the USA. She did not do this with hollow, combative slogans, but with precise questions to a panel of experts. They then had to say sentences like: Yes, the will of the people does not rule in Congress, but the money of lobbyists in the oil or pharmaceutical industry. The video she tweeted has already been viewed over 38 million times.

Big Pharma companies often say that drugs “need” to be expensive to fund research. What they don’t tell you is that they use * publicly-funded research * for expensive, privatized drugs.

Ocasio-Cortez's following is growing every hour. She already has over three million followers on Twitter, which is a long time more followers than the Democratic group leader Nancy Pelosi. The party has already asked Ocasio-Cortez to train other MPs in the use of social media.

AOC vs. Amazon

The Amazon case this week also showed how powerful Ocasio-Cortez is now. The world's largest online retailer wanted to build a branch in Queens, billions should be invested and 25,000 jobs created. In return, New York wanted Amazon to waive taxes and pay $ 3 billion in subsidies. A cheek, thought Ocasio-Cortez.

She led a protest movement against the deal. A corporation that pays no taxes despite a profit of $ 11 billion should certainly not receive $ 3 billion, the politician argues. Amazon also refused to discuss the approval of trade unions. "Unions are the ladder for advancement to the middle class." In view of the protest, Amazon withdrew.

Ocasio-Cortez has become a brand. On Twitter she now only calls herself AOC. Her fans actually gave her the abbreviation, the media adopted it. With that she has climbed the Olympus of American idols like Franklin D. Roosevelt, FDR, or John F. Kennedy, JFK.

It all started with Bernie

But how was this rapid ascent possible? Congressional beginners usually get lost in parliamentary bureaucracy in the first few months. How did AOC manage to steal the show from everyone?

Her political career began with Bernie Sanders. When he ran against Hillary Clinton in 2015, Ocasio-Cortez joined his campaign as an organizer. And that's exactly where she was discovered by like-minded people. Four young people from the tech industry had just founded the Justice Democrats. Their goal: to break up the Democratic Party from within and bring it onto a strictly left-wing course.

When the Justice Democrats heard and saw Ocasio-Cortez, they knew: the quick-witted, charismatic woman was perfect for her mission. She had also proven that she could survive. After the death of her father, she worked as a bartender to help the mother and her brother. This despite studying international politics.

They had her run against incumbent Democrat Joe Crowley in a congressional district of Brooklyn and Queens in the primaries. The Justice Democrats trained them to deal with the press and citizens. They designed their own strategy for their appearance on social media.

And indeed, Ocasio-Cortez managed to outdo the white professional politician in the minority-dominated constituency with his heart and left agenda. The conspiratorial force had offended the entire Democratic establishment. The victory in the congressional elections in November was then just a formality.

Reshaping the USA

When AOC went to Washington, it made headlines because at first it could not afford a rental apartment. But ever since she started drawing MPs and money for a staff, Ocasio-Cortez has hired her comrades from the Justice Democrats as staff. With their crew behind them, AOC is now really getting started.

Zero CO2- Output, basic income, free universities. AOC's vision would cost the US $ 8,000 billion.

Without consulting the parliamentary group leadership, she launched the central Justice Democrats project in Congress, a resolution on the Green New Deal based on the New Deal, the economic and social reforms initiated by Franklin D. Roosevelt after the Great Depression.

The New Green Deal is designed to mobilize America to fight global warming. For AOC and its allies, it is “a matter of life or death,” as they say. Climate policy is intended to serve as a lever for a fundamental transformation of the economy and society in the USA.

New Green Deal

But now she has to row back for the first time. Your recently published explanations on the Green New Deal revealed how radically the Justice Democrats want to turn society upside down. The state should reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2030. To do this, the entire energy generation, traffic and agriculture would have to be completely rebuilt.

The state would have to raise minimum wages, make the university free, introduce a public health system and pay out a basic income even for Americans "who do not want to work." The Bloomberg agency puts the annual cost of these reforms at around $ 8,000 billion.

The whole thing should be financed with tax increases or a gigantic expansion of the money supply, i.e. by printing banknotes. Ocasio-Cortez had to take the explanations that sparked shock waves among Democrats off the net. It was just the beginning of a dialogue, she said.

The New Green Deal, however, is unlikely to disappear in a drawer. Ocasio-Cortez and her Justice Democrats are planning a tour of all US member states, during which they want to swear democratic politicians and candidates to their revolution. In addition, the young activists are preparing their next coup. In the primaries for Congress 2020, they want to replace six more Democrats in New York with young leftists. Then the AOC model may go into series production.
