But to start a company you need a business idea. However: Anyone who has ever tried to find a coherent and profitable business idea knows how difficult it can be. Already when identifying possible subject areas, many stumble.

There are opportunities to create a complete list of promising topics for your own independence in a short time with relatively little effort. One of these options is the Quora method. We will now briefly introduce these to you:

The method is actually very simple and easy to explain. Below you will also find a template for download with which you can quickly and easily put the 4 steps in writing on paper.

What is Quora?

Quora is a website where users ask questions and get them answered by the community.

The whole page actually has only one topic:

  • I have a question and am looking for an answer. Or to put it another way: I have a problem and am looking for a solution.

There's nothing better than a list of problems when you're looking for a business idea. On Quora you can quickly and easily find an endless list of problems. And these are not problems that someone has thought up, but actually authentic questions from users to which they are looking for and need an answer. Otherwise they wouldn't ask the question.

There are also other portals where you can ask questions to the community: gutefrage.net or Reddit.com. The good thing about Quora is the pre-selection of questions on the basis of topics that are consistent with your own person.

So if you are clever, you can use this list to derive possible topics that are coherent with you. And this “in tune with you” is absolutely essential. We don't want to find just any topic, we want to find YOURS. A subject that you can naturally and intuitively deal with from within.

Because coherent business ideas lie exactly where you can intuitively satisfy an external need with inner joy. That is what I call a well-rounded idea.

The following 4 step plan is all you need to do it. We have also created a small template that you can use here can download. The template includes a pre-made PDF worksheet that guides you through all four steps.

In the following we will go into the four steps again in detail:

Log in to www.quora.com. After signing up, Quora lets you choose a few topics that you might be interested in. When making your selection, make sure that you really only choose topics that you are really passionate about. Topics that naturally interest you.

Because, as I said, we don't want to find just any business idea, but YOURS! Therefore, it is important that you intuitively follow your heart. What attracts you What do you enjoy Where do you feel at home?

In this way, choose the topics you are interested in from the suggested topics (health, politics, books, music, literature, technology ...). In each of these areas there are in turn sub-areas. Select these accordingly too.

Once you've done that, Quora will list a series of questions in those areas for you. Look around. Read the questions. See what questions users have in your favorite areas. Only select questions that you can answer intuitively without researching.

Which of them can you answer right away? Really only focus on questions that you can answer intuitively.

When choosing, pay attention to the following questions:

  • What question you see might multiple people ask yourself?
  • Which question comes up frequently in a similar form?
  • What questions might users outside of Quora also be interested in?

Now write down those 5 questions and then try to find common ground. You can use the template above for this.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do these questions have in common?
  • What specific topic are these questions about?
  • What is the real crux of these questions?

Now use the questions from step 2 and the identified topic from step 3 to identify the underlying customer problem.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the real problem behind this?
  • What are they actually looking for?
  • What is the trigger that leads the user to ask this question?

Now think about what a solution to this customer problem could look like.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Who could solve this problem and how?
  • What could the solution for this look like in detail?
  • What does it take so that the user no longer has to ask himself this question?
  • What would a world look like in which this question cannot arise?

In this way you can quickly and easily find a first direction for your independence. If you identify specific, well-defined subject areas that you are well versed in and where users ask many questions that you can answer, you are on the right track!
