There is no 2G network in Japan

Learn about your iPhone's LTE options

The options for mobile data on your iPhone may vary depending on the operator network.

If your wireless service provider supports VoLTE

On your iPhone, go to Settings> Cellular> Data Options and tap Turn LTE On, or go to Settings> Cellular Data and tap Turn LTE On. If your wireless service provider supports Voice over LTE (VoLTE), the following options are displayed:

  • Off: Turns off LTE
  • Voice & data: Allows voice calls and the use of mobile data via LTE
  • Data only: Allows the use of mobile data, but not voice calls over LTE

If your network operator does not support VoLTE

If your network operator does not support VoLTE and is a GSM network operator, you will see one of these options:

  • LTE or 4G: Allows the use of mobile data via the LTE or 4G network, if available.
  • 3G: Allows the use of mobile data over the 3G network, if available.
  • 2G: Allows the use of mobile data via the 2G network, if available.

Depending on the mobile network provider, 4G can identify a UMTS or LTE connection. If your wireless service provider does not support VoLTE and is a CDMA network operator, only the option "Activate LTE" is displayed. This allows the use of mobile data via the LTE network, if available.
