What is the best glue for fiberglass

Gluing GRP

Because fiberglass mats are also essentially made of Polyester resin, vinyl ester resin and acrylic resin exist, the adhesive should also be selected according to the type of resin of the component to be bonded. Resin adhesives with chemically and physically similar properties to the respective plastic base of the GRP are therefore suitable as construction adhesives. Both polyester resin adhesives and epoxy resin adhesives as well as formulations made of polyurethane or acrylate are on the market here. Dissolving adhesives are rather unsuitable.

Around GRP with metals, high-strength bonding such as aluminum, stainless steel or steel are possible 2-component construction adhesives based on acrylate or epoxy resin at. An example of this is 3M Scotch-Weld 7270 with a suitable epoxy or acrylate formulation and a color indicator, which clearly shows the hardening status by changing the color from yellow to green.

Around Wood (painted, primed or coated) with glass fiber reinforced thermosetting plastic so-called reaction adhesives are suitable. But here the different surface finishes influence the adhesive properties. 3M Scotch-Weld DP 110, a fast-curing, clear 2-component construction adhesive based on epoxy resin, which also bonds GRP with metal and a variety of other plastics, such as PC, hard PVC and ABS, is recommended here.

Bonding GRP (thermoset) with wood (raw) or thermoplastic-thermoset GRP combinations is possible with 3M Scotch-Weld DP 490, a tough-elastic black two-component construction adhesive based on epoxy resin with increased heat resistance and good aging behavior.
