What are proven benefits of dry fasting

Fasting means consciously avoiding solid food for a limited period of time. In addition to a religious context, the therapeutic context plays a major role nowadays; the latter is known as therapeutic fasting. There are a number of different variants, all of which, however, require a few days of preparation and are accompanied by medical examinations in order to minimize health risks. The aim of food deprivation is to purify and detoxify the body. The organism activates the inner self-healing powers, the metabolism is stimulated and the intestine is cleaned. Therapeutic fasting is said to increase well-being and improve health. It can also be used to prevent or treat diseases. Often the goal is pursued to enable regeneration not only for the body but also for the soul.

Alternating fasting for cardiovascular strengthening and weight reduction

The Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition at the University of Illinois investigated the possibilities that alternate fasting (ADF) offers normal weight people to influence body weight and the risk of heart disease. For this purpose, the researchers carried out a twelve-week study with 32 subjects (BMI 20-29.9 kg / m2) who were randomly divided into an ADF and a control group. In the course of […]

Fasting and Dieting for Rheumatoid Arthritis

In a randomized blind study, the University of Oslo tested the theory that the frequent relapses after fasting therapy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis can be reduced by subsequent diet. The sample of 27 subjects took part in a four-week program on a health farm. A seven to ten day fasting phase was followed by an individually adapted [...]

Fasting increases the effectiveness of radiation or chemotherapy

The University of Southern California, USC Keck School of Medicine and the University of Duisburg-Essen were able to show in a study that fasting improves the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy. For this purpose, gliomic cells from mice (GL26), rats (C6) and humans (U251, LN229 and A172) were treated in vitro with temozolomide and treated for 48 hours before radiation or chemotherapy […]

Fasting to improve mood

Andreas Michalsen from the Immanuel Hospital Berlin examined fasting as a method to improve mood in chronic pain. Studies have already found that medically supervised fasting over a period of 7-21 days can be used effectively in the treatment of rheumatic diseases and chronic pain syndromes. Michalsen was able to prove by means of experimental research that fasting increases the concentration of serotonin, [...]

Lemon juice treatment to reduce cardiovascular risk factors

The Seoul Women’s University proposed that a lemon juice regimen reduces body weight and body fat and thus insulin resistance and known risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. To test this theory, 84 overweight Korean women were randomly divided into three groups in a study: a control group (K), a placebo diet group (P), and a lemon juice group (Z). In P [...]

Metabolic and cardiovascular consequences of water fasting

The Intermountain Heart Collaborative Study Group examined the metabolic and cardiovascular consequences of limited water fasting. After animal experiments have shown that fasting has a life-prolonging effect, this crossover study examines whether fasting triggers changes in human biomarkers that may have effects on short- and long-term health. For this purpose, 30 healthy subjects without the youngest [...]

Fasting normoglycemia in type 2 diabetes

Researchers Steven and Taylor conducted a study to determine whether normoglycemia in type 2 diabetes could be restored by using a very low-calorie diet. The sample consisted of 15 subjects with type 2 diabetes for <4 years (short-term group) and 14 subjects with type 2 diabetes> 8 years (long-term group) who were subjected to an eight-week very low-calorie diet. Blood tests and blood pressure [...]

Buchinger therapeutic fasting and endurance training

Jochen Steiniger and some colleagues researched the effect of Buchinger therapeutic fasting and endurance training on energy metabolism and physical fitness. For this purpose, overweight subjects went through a 28-day therapeutic fasting therapy according to Buchinger and energy, carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism were analyzed with and without additional endurance training. The aim was to find out whether the Buchinger therapeutic fasting is associated with a critical loss of protein [...]

The effect of fasting on oxidative stress, aging processes and metabolism

The University of Florida initiated a double-blind crossover study to investigate the effects of intermittent fasting (IF) on oxidative stress, aging processes, and metabolism. Since strict calorie restriction cannot be sustained for a longer period of time, the study took a modified approach of fasting (25% of normal caloric intake) and feasting (175% of normal caloric intake). The […]

On the effect of morning fasting

Researchers at the University of Bath and the University of Nottingham compared a morning fast with a high-carbohydrate breakfast for energy intake, hormonal response and metabolism. The randomized cross-over study examined a sample of 35 subjects who either fasted in the morning or had a high-carbohydrate breakfast before both groups had an ad libitum lunch three hours later. [...]
