How do I choose a blog name
Blog Name Ideas: Tips to Picking the Perfect Name for Your Blog
What's the biggest hurdle every budding blogger faces?
Try choosing a name for the blog.
Naming a blog can be quite tricky, especially if you are into all of the blogging and branding that you do. And if you're just like me, you could spend hours brainstorming on a name only to end up with a list of shitty names.
Sure there is a better way?
Well I'm glad you asked! If you're the type who really hates making names or is just plain terrible, I've found a few tips and tricks to help you find the perfect name for your blog.
How to choose the perfect name for your blog
Tip # 1: Understand how your name represents your brand and blog
Before we bring out the blog name masterpieces, it is important to take a moment and understand what you want your blog and brand name to represent.
Ask yourself these four questions:
- What is your blog about?
- Who will the target audience be?
- What kind of tone (casual, serious, etc.) will it be?
- How does the blog name help build your brand?
The name of your blog should relate to the type of content you are creating. Imagine you had a blog called "The Foodie Corner," but your content relates solely to reviews of products made for natural hair products for men. You would end up confusing readers expecting a food blog.
Having a corporate / cool name but writing in a casual / funny tone gives the reader the wrong impression and leaves you wondering whether or not they should take you seriously.
Be consistent with your brand and what it represents!
If you want to start a food blog, you should use words related to food or eating (e.g. snacking, vegan, healthy, chomping, etc.).
If your blog is about digital marketing techniques, use keywords that are related to that industry or use industry-specific terms (e.g. SEO, digital marketing, SEM, etc.).
Tip # 2: have a thesaurus ready and get creative!
At this point, you should know which words best describe your blog. Now comes the fun part! Get a thesaurus or go to thesaurus.com and check out similar words that can be used for your blog name.
Let's say you are doing a food blog. You might decide that the main body of your content is related to the following keywords: food, healthy meals, vegans, exercise, happiness, recipes, and diet.
Plug these words into thesaurus.com and you'll get words like snack, food, fresh, fit, joy, treats, diet, munchies, strong, hearty, veggies, and bliss. Add some of these words together (e.g. vegan munchies or matching recipes) and voila, you have a name for your blog.
If you're not looking for words to name your blog, you can always use a thesaurus to use a short list of words to use.
Tip # 3: Use nouns, verbs, or even descriptive words that relate to you and your content
You can decide that using the thesaurus is enough, but if you really want to take your name game to the next level, add nouns, verbs, and / or descriptive words.
By adding nouns, verbs, and descriptive words, the name of your blog can be further customized so that it uniquely becomes your name. Also, you will avoid overlap with other websites or blogs that are similar to your websites.
The food blog example allows you to add nouns or descriptive words that relate to you as a blogger. For example, this could be the boss, the guy, the girl, the rookie, the meals, the advice, the breakfast, the dinner, the lunch, the club, etc.
If you match them together, you will get gems such as B. suitable meals for girls, vegan boss munchies, fresh kitchen recipes or a healthy diet club.
You can even go a step further and add verbs or word variations to make it even more unique. Some examples would be: the right recipes for girls, eating vegan dishes, happy bakers, fit and fresh.
Pro-level tip: use made up words or create your own words
For those who are creative, you can try inventing or creating entirely new words to call them on your blog.
This takes a little out-of-the-box thinker, but makeup can be a great way to add fun to your blog name. Some great examples would be Snackzilla, veganized, Sizzlerella, healthy.
Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun with all sorts of words. You could end up with a cool name that nobody ever thought of!
Tip # 4: If all else fails, use a blog name / word generator
You may have tried all of the above tips and still can't come up with a really good name. Do not worry! Try a name / word generator for some great suggestions.
Websites similar to Wordroid.com are a great tool for finding funny word combinations, and it's really easy to do. Just enter a word related to your content, hit the Wordoids button, and you'll be presented with a list of names to use.
What's great about Wordroids is that you can set the boundaries of your words, set the quality of the words, set patterns, and even include domain name availability. This means that you can check whether the name you registered on .com fell or not.
